PT registration and enrolment: keep the obligations separate

Use Maharashtra’s PTRC and PTEC terminology to understand why certificates need separate checks.

By Filedge editorial team. Published 12 October 2026. 1 min read.

Why there can be more than one certificate

A business may have obligations in its own capacity and in its role as an employer. These need separate assessment. A certificate related to one obligation should not be used as evidence that all PT requirements are complete.

Maharashtra uses the terms Professional Tax Registration Certificate (PTRC) and Professional Tax Enrolment Certificate (PTEC). This article uses that state as an illustration. Other states may use different terminology and processes.

Review the actual certificate

Make a register with the certificate type, entity name, number, state and status. Keep a copy of each document and note the portal used. Ask your adviser to confirm the obligation associated with each certificate and the relevant payment or return schedule.

For example, a founder might have a business enrolment certificate but no documented assessment of employer obligations. The next step is to assess the employee facts, not assume that the existing certificate is sufficient.

A practical handover checklist

  • Business constitution and operating locations.
  • Existing PT certificates and applications.
  • Employee salary records for the period.
  • Previous payment receipts and return acknowledgements.
  • Any notices or unresolved correspondence.
  • A list of missing certificates or unclear statuses.

Before applying or paying

Confirm the applicable state rules and the exact entity involved. Verify current portal instructions and notifications for the period. Do not apply Maharashtra’s terminology or schedules to another state without checking.
