Startup India DPIIT recognition: eligibility, documents and the application process
Who qualifies as a startup under the DPIIT definition, the documents to keep ready, how the application works on the Startup India portal, and what recognition does and does not give you.
DPIIT recognition is a certificate from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade confirming that your business is a startup under the government's definition. It does not change how your company is registered or taxed on its own, but it unlocks the schemes under Startup India.
Who qualifies
The core conditions in the startup definition are:
- Entity type: private limited company, registered partnership firm or LLP.
- Age: within the permitted number of years from the date of incorporation or registration. The limit has been extended for some sectors, so check the current notification.
- Turnover: below the annual turnover limit prescribed for startups in every financial year since incorporation.
- Not formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.
- Innovation or scalability: working on innovation, development or improvement of products, processes or services, or a scalable business model with high potential for employment or wealth creation.
The exact age and turnover limits are notified by DPIIT and have been revised before. Read the current limits on the Startup India portal before you apply.
Documents to keep ready
- Certificate of incorporation or registration (and partnership deed or LLP agreement where applicable)
- Details of directors or partners, with PAN
- A short description of what you do and why it is innovative or scalable
- A website link, pitch deck, video or other proof of the product or service
- Any patent, trademark or award you have, as supporting material
- Authorised signatory details
The application process
- Register on the Startup India portal with your email and mobile number.
- Complete the entity profile: incorporation details, directors, address, sector and industry.
- Fill the recognition form: the self-certification declarations and the description of your innovation.
- Upload supporting documents and submit.
- Respond to queries quickly if DPIIT asks for clarification.
- Receive the recognition certificate with a DPIIT number on approval.
What recognition gives you
- Access to self-certification under certain labour and environmental laws
- Fast-track support for patents and reduced fees on some intellectual property filings
- Relaxed public procurement norms in prior experience and turnover
- Eligibility to apply for the section 80-IAC tax holiday, which has its own approval process and conditions
What it does not give you
Recognition does not bring funding, does not automatically exempt you from tax, and does not replace routine compliance. A recognised startup still files GST returns, TDS, annual company filings and income tax returns. See annual ROC compliance for the company-law side.
Next steps
If you are still choosing a structure, read OPC vs LLP vs Pvt Ltd first, because recognition is available only to some entity types. Protect your brand early with trademark registration. For help with the application, see Startup India recognition.
Questions people ask
Is DPIIT recognition mandatory for startups?
No. A company can operate without it. Recognition is the entry point to Startup India schemes, such as tax benefits under section 80-IAC for eligible startups that apply separately, and easier public procurement terms.
Which entities are eligible?
A private limited company, a registered partnership firm or an LLP. Sole proprietorships and public limited companies are not eligible.
How long does recognition take?
It depends on how complete the application is and whether the department raises a query. Clear descriptions of the innovation and working supporting documents shorten the back-and-forth.
Does DPIIT recognition mean automatic tax exemption?
No. Recognition is the first step. The income tax exemption under section 80-IAC needs a separate approval from the Inter-Ministerial Board, and has its own conditions.
