GSTR-2B reconciliation: what a mismatch means

Compare purchase records with the GST statement and create a useful action list.

By Filedge editorial team. Published 12 October 2026. 1 min read.

What are you comparing?

GSTR-2B is a system-generated statement relevant to input tax credit. Reconciliation compares the statement with your purchase records. A match helps establish consistency, but the credit still needs to meet the applicable eligibility conditions.

This beginner guide explains an organisational process. It does not decide a credit claim, reversal or adjustment for a particular transaction.

Build a comparison sheet

Use columns for supplier GSTIN, invoice number, invoice date, taxable value and tax amount. Add the book entry reference and a status: matched, missing, different or needs review.

Keep the source files for the period. Avoid overwriting the original statement when adding notes.

Work through an example

Your books contain an invoice from a supplier, but you cannot find it in the statement you downloaded. First check the invoice reference, supplier GSTIN and period. Then ask the supplier to confirm the reporting details. Record the answer and pass the unresolved item to the person preparing the return.

Do not create another invoice entry merely to force a match. Likewise, do not treat an item in the statement as your purchase until you verify the transaction and supporting records.

Keep an action list

  • Identify the difference precisely.
  • Attach the original invoice and statement reference.
  • Assign an owner to obtain the missing information.
  • Record the explanation and supporting evidence.
  • Have the proposed return treatment checked before approval.
